Spring fishing has kicked into high gear, thanks to plentiful bait and some help from high tides.

A big part of that is the bait boats staying up on the live shrimp and croakers. With the speckled trout coming in to spawn, the live croakers certainly make a huge difference. I am not saying you cannot catch them on live shrimp, soft plastics, or even Topwater baits, but those croakers work better than just about anything you can throw this time of year. The near-shore fishing has been fabulous, due mostly in part to the recent high tides. We were able to get the boats near the grass to fish for redfish, black drum, and flounder. It’s also helpful that we are seeing rain minnows and mullet just about everywhere we fish. Find the bait, and you will find the fish. The bridges and near-shore reefs are still holding good numbers of puppy drum, white trout, speckled trout, and redfish. The spring bite has definitely kicked into high gear. Hopefully, we will get some more stable weather and be able to enjoy it for many more weeks. There have been plenty of folks out on the water. Please be courteous to others and offer help when you see it’s needed. Have fun and be safe. Enjoy t his feature?
