Even the extreme heat could not keep avid fishermen (and women) from enjoying the long holiday weekend on the water - and the fish certainly are obliging.
- by Sonny Schindler, Shore Thing Fishing Charters Also, the best speckled trout bites have been in those first few hours of daylight. The bait, birds and fish seem to have settled in nicely these last few days. The windier days we had last week certainly murked up the water and made fishing much more difficult. With calmer winds this week the fishing has definitely improved – but without that breeze, the heat is stifling. We are finding plenty of big fish lurking around. The large schools of pogies are holding gargantuan bull reds, jack crevalles, and big sharks. We were fishing a school of pogies a few days ago, and all the big fish were cruising around on the surface together feeding. It was an impressive sight and some insanely good fishing. Our snapper boat has been taking full advantage of the calm seas and still doing very well on big red snappers. It is just an issue of wind and heat. On breezier days, the fishing has still been great in the protected waters. We are catching plenty of speckled trout, white, trout, puppy, drum, and redfish on the nearshore reefs and marshes. On calmer days, the boats running south to the barrier islands and the Louisiana Marsh are doing fantastic on the school trout and big fish. But be prepared; there are going to be plenty of crowds at the bait shops, boat launches, and all the fishing spots. The heat is not going anywhere any time soon. Bring plenty of water and plenty of patience. The fishing has been incredible! Please be courteous to others, bring the kiddos out, and go have some fun. Enjoy this feature?
