What's Up, Waveland? February 2023

2/2/2023

The answer to “What’s up, Waveland?” here in February is easy – the largest Waveland event of the year is coming!

Krewe of Nereids Parade
February 12

On Sunday February 12, the 55th annual Krewe of Nereids Parade will roll down Highway 90 in Bay St. Louis and Waveland. At noon, the parade will begin its route from the intersection of Highway 90 and Drinkwater Boulevard and travel west down Highway 90 to its conclusion at Waveland Avenue.

Credited as the largest cultural event in Hancock County, the lavish spectacle will consist of elaborately decorated floats, marching bands, walking groups, and costumed riders tossing beads and trinkets to the waiting crowds.

The Krewe of Nereids was organized in Waveland in 1966 and has grown into one of the oldest and biggest Carnival organizations on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Named for the mythological daughters of Nereus and Doris, the krewe is all female but welcomes and appreciates the support of men and non-members who are part of the Nereids family. Shrouded in secrecy, the identities of the krewe’s female royalty are never made public, but the guessing is part of the fun!

Immediately following the Nereids parade is the Krewe of Hancock Truck Parade—a timeless tradition full of classic cars and many familiar faces.

Keep Waveland Beautiful

We always want Waveland to look good – for visitors, of course, but also for those of us who live here! As it turns out, the Keep Waveland Beautiful Committee will be hard at work on Friday, February 10 planting crepe myrtle trees on Coleman Avenue from the railroad tracks to the beach. They welcome all the help they can get! They’ll be starting at 8:00 am, but feel free to stop by with your garden gloves and shovel any time that day. I’m sure they’ll be happy to put you to work!

Medical Marijuana Coming Soon

Speaking of happy, those that have been waiting for the medical marijuana dispensaries to open will need to wait only a little longer. Waveland Pharmacy’s pharmacist is Rudy Letellier, and his place is one of a handful of dispensaries that will open in Waveland and Bay St. Louis soon. He shared that the ABC has completed inspections, and the state labs have completed their assessments of the cultivated product here in Mississippi. All that remains is turning the flower into products such as gummies and edibles and vapes, which should mean these dispensaries will be open around the third week of February.
