In a recent article entitled "​These are Mississippi’s Must-See Music Venues," Rolling Stone magazine cited our own 100 Men Hall as a must-see, citing its importance as a stop on the "Chitlin' Circuit" of black musicians, and the importance of the venue today. Other nearby sites in the article are the Government Street Grocery in Ocean Springs and the Ground Zero Blues Club in Biloxi.

Port Bienville Short Line Railroad (PBVR) was recognized for its safety record by the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) for above-industry-average performance during 2021. 
Port Bienville Railroad also received a Jake Award with Distinction in recognition of reportable injury-free performance last year.
 
Connecting the port to CSX, Port Bienville Short Line Railroad , owned and operated by Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission, boasts 17 miles of track and processes over 8,000 loaded railcars a year. ​

The judges were so impressed by their performance that they gave the songsters the Golden Buzzer, essentially a free pass to the elimination round of the competition. BSL came in at #2, with USA TODAY’s travel editors citing the city’s unique shops, excellent restaurants and kayak trails as making it special. Neighboring Ocean Springs was crowned #1. Congrats to both!

Jame’ Crowder was named the recipient of the first annual $1,000 Hospitality Scholarship sponsored by the Mystic Krewe of the Seahorse. Crowder, a senior at Our Lady Academy, is enrolled in AP, Dual Credit and Honors courses and is active in her school and church community. She will be attending Mississippi State University in the fall as a business major and plans to transfer to Auburn University in 2023 for their Hospitality Management Program. Congratulations!

​Audubon Poster Contest Educates Students About Nesting Shorebirds

Recently, Audubon Delta-Mississippi worked with the East Hancock YMCA on an education program about beach-nesting birds. After learning about the lives of Least Terns and Black Skimmers, 60 second- to fifth-grade students were asked to design a poster highlighting some of the challenges beach-nesting birds face. The four winning designs will be hung near nesting bird colonies across the coast this summer to encourage locals and tourists to be mindful of our beach-nesting bird colonies.

Attorney Brehm Bell Announces Law Scholarship

For the seventh year, attorney Brehm Bell is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a Hancock County high school senior who is planning to pursue a degree in a law-related field. The application is available here and can be submitted via mail to Brehm Bell, 544 Main St., Bay St. Louis, MS 9520, or via email to aija@brehmbell.com no later than April 29, 2022. The winner will be announced by May 6.

Three 2018 Our Lady Academy graduates (pictured, l-r)– Camille Martin, Kiley Jacob, and Sarah Deano – each received a 2022 Marcus Elvis Taylor Memorial Medal, the university’s highest academic award. Only the top one percent of all Ole Miss students receives this award each year. Sarah and Kiley are pursuing degrees in Accountancy from the Patterson School of Accountancy; Camille is pursuing a degree in Biological Science from the College of Liberal Arts.

OLA Robotics Team Wins 2022 Bayou Regional Competition

Our Lady Academy’s Alpha Omega Robotics Team won the Bayou Regional Robotics Competition, competing against high schools from 40 states and Mexico. The teams had six weeks to design, build and program their robots to perform a series of tasks using code and programming, CAD, mechanical and electrical engineering, automation and robotics.

Hope Haven Earns New Accreditation

Hope Haven Children's Advocacy Center hosted an open house recently to celebrate its accreditation by the National Children’s Alliance. The recognition means the group is reaching the highest standards when it comes to helping abused children. One of only 13 children’s advocacy centers in the state, Hope Haven works with the District Attorney, Child Protective Services, and law enforcement to investigate child abuse cases. Last year alone they served more than 400 children.

"March of the Mayors" Food Drive

The second annual “March of the Mayors” food drive is now underway, and the mayors of Waveland, Bay St. Louis and Diamondhead are leading their residents in this collection effort to benefit local food pantries. OLA Continues "Big Sister - Little Sister" Mentoring Program

The Our Lady Academy (OLA) Class of 2022 continued its Big Sister-Little Sister tradition during a special prayer service at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church this past Friday. 
Days before, each participating senior left an ornamental gift in her little sister’s locker, offering a clue to her big sister’s identity. The following day, seniors swathed themselves in wrapping paper and a gift tag, naming their little sister. Freshmen searched for their names and excitedly unwrapped their big sisters.
​

The ceremonial act of “passing the torch” was observed during Friday’s prayer service. The seniors will help them navigate a successful first year of high school.  

Ms. Mary's Brings Relief to Storm-torn Louisiana

After watching the devastation Hurricane Ida brought to Louisiana, owners Bart and Mary Brooks of Ms. Mary’s Old Town Snoballs collected donations for its victims. Edwards, president and CEO of the Gulf Coast Business Council, will receive his honor on July 15 at the organization’s Black Tie & Blue Jeans Gala. The program honors accomplished and influential leaders who have contributed to mentoring young professionals in Coastal Mississippi.

"I think it’s important to share our successes, and hear what others are doing to improve the system.” 

​CASA volunteers serve as the eyes and ears of the court, advocating for abused and/or neglected children.

Amit Bose, dep. administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration, said that restoring passenger service to the Gulf Coast was one of his “top two or three priorities” right now. They cite BSL's "vibrant arts community and largely undeveloped shoreline," and suggests enjoying it now, before development and Amtrak service in 2022 bring more visitors. Audubon Mississippi has unveiled a Coastal Bird Storyboard Trail comprised of six interpretive displays installed along Beach Boulevard in Harrison County. The signs educate beachgoers about the beach-nesting birds that visit coastal Mississippi to breed. Audubon partnered with local artists The Painter and Poet, artist Tami Curtis and writer Perry Guy to create the storyboards, each featuring one of six key species that nest on Mississippi beaches or migrate through the area. The Hancock Resource Center has been awarded $400,000 by the Federal Home Loan Bank in Dallas to repair 40 homes owned by older, special needs, and low-income residents. Construction will begin in the coming months and should be completed within the next two years. Read the full story here.
