Competitors prepare to launch their creations at the start of the Cardboard Boat Race.

True cardboard ingenuity was on display at the first annual "What Floats Your Cardboard Boat" Race, sponsored by the Hancock County Historical Society. Fifteen boats were entered in the race, and as much time was spent in decoration as in construction, it appeared.

Vikings, pirates and submarine commanders, some genuinely surprised that their boats floated at all, paddled their way into the winner’s circle and claimed bragging rights. The HCCS hopes to make this an annual event and hopes for even more participation next year.
