Blending gospel music with country is as natural as breathing for the dynamic trio of Chapel Hart from Poplarville, Mississippi.
- Story by Wendy Sullivan
When we caught up with them in a recent phone interview, the women expressed how thankful they are for the love and support of family and community, enabling them to do what they love.
Now based in New Orleans, the trio has played as far away as Innsbruck, Austria. Their 2021 Follow Your Heart Tour brings them to 100 Men Hall in Bay St. Louis on April 24 (tickets are almost sold out as of this writing; act fast to get yours). The three performers told us they love connecting with their audiences by engaging them in the musical experience. As an example, they mentioned a recent concert where they enjoyed the spirit and energy of the audience. Many sang along with them on familiar songs, and their new material was also received enthusiastically. With their close bond as family, the women of Chapel Hart use their shared experiences and their differences to create music reflecting their individual perspectives and personalities. Drawing on life experiences, the women compose the group’s music together. They believe that this approach results in songs that are more relatable to a variety of people – including those with little experience in country music. Instead of a quiet year in pandemic seclusion, the Hart trio “hit the ground running” by recording a new album and the “Jesus and Alcohol” video. Their newly named album Girls are Back in Town will be released this year. They are looking forward to sharing songs from the new album in Bay St. Louis. Chapel Hart is now receiving even greater recognition from the music industry. They were nominated for a Grammy and are one of ten rising artists in the CMT’s prestigious “Next Women of Country” of 2021. They also are currently a candidate for the CMT 12 Pack Countdown for their video for “You Can Have Him Jolene.” The hilarious video for the song was filmed in Pass Christian, and among the locals featured in it is the town’s police chief.
