The weather was parade-perfect on Fat Tuesday, February 25,  for the annual Krewe of Real People: The Next Generation Mardi Gras parade. It's the coast's only predominantly African-American parade.  This year's King and Queen, Dr. Myron Labat and Dr. Cherie Labat, presided over the festivities.

Reigning as queen of the 100 Women (of 100 Men Hall) group was Mariah Dedeaux.  Mariah's Mardi Gras experience was marred earlier in the season when she was singled out for a racist throw, in an incident that made national news.  100 Women founder Rachel Dangermond said it was an honor to have Dedeaux as queen for the group's inaugural march.  "Mariah is poised, gracious and has a vibrant spirit."

As always, the parade was a fantastic finale for the Gulf Coast Carnival season, providing a wonderful time for both participants and spectators.

Krewe of Nereids Mardi Gras Parade 2020

Gloomy skies and persistent rain into the afternoon did not dampen the spirits of the Krewe of Nereids, Hancock County's oldest Carnival organization, or the parade goers that lined Highway 90 for the party of the season. As they say, the show must go on - and while the rain delayed, it did not get in the way of a rowdy good time for all!

The all-female Krewe of Nereids was founded in 1966 by a group of 96 charter members. Their first ball was held the following year, a modest affair held in a local gymnasium. By contrast, today's ball is so large that it's held in the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, and the parade is the largest in Hancock County.
