Inside historic Century Hall, Jane Evans Designs is a treasure trove of creativity and design. This unique store, filled with shimmering works of art and original Bay St. Louis gear, embodies the artistic spirit and community ethos of its owner and artist, Jane Evans.

Picture

Since 2012, Jane Evans has transformed her lifelong passion for art into a flourishing business, starting with her popular ceramic crosses. Her journey in the art world is deeply rooted in her upbringing as the daughter of an accomplished architect, from whom she inherited a keen eye for design and meticulous craftsmanship. Jane’s transition from selling her creations to local shops to establishing her own store in 2019 is a testament to her dedication and love for art.

Picture

Jane Evans Designs offers an eclectic collection of silver and gold-leaf handcrafted ornaments. These range from local landmarks like LSU’s Tiger Stadium and the Bay St. Louis Bay Bridge to whimsical designs featuring crowns, crosses, bunnies, and even portraits of Frida Kahlo. The shop also boasts a unique line of ceramic turtle and crab shells, many adorned with gold leaf, alongside a range of specialized Bay St. Louis gear – t-shirts, water bottles, and signs – all designed by Jane herself.

This Second Saturday, Jane Evans Designs elevates the shopping experience by blending art with music and social responsibility. The store will feature DJ Doug Funnie from Good Earth Records, setting the vibe with tunes from 3-6 pm on the front porch of Century Hall. Adding to the festive atmosphere, Jane will be selling special rainbow ornaments, with proceeds supporting The Kings Kitchen, a local charity. Additionally, customers can participate in giveaways with donations also benefiting this cause.

In line with the SOUP’er Mudfest celebrations, Jane Evans Designs will be serving Walter’s famous shrimp and corn soup, offering a culinary treat to complement the artistic feast.

Picture

Jane’s family plays a crucial role in the business, adding a personal touch to everything they do. Her architect daughter, Elizabeth Dyer, contributes her design expertise, while daughter Brittany Christy recently joined full-time, handling sales and promotions. Jane’s husband, Walter, supports the operation by making molds and handling the heavy lifting.

Visitors to Jane Evans Designs can expect more than just a shopping trip; they will experience a hub of creativity, community engagement, and a warm, family atmosphere. Open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, Jane Evans Designs invites everyone to explore their unique offerings and be part of a special Second Saturday filled with art, music, and a sense of community.

Spotlight on:
Hairworks

102 Blaize Avenue, BSL | (228) 467-0104
Wed - Sat 10 am - til ?; Tuesdays by appointment only

Picture

Hairworks stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community and style. This vibrant salon, operated by the dynamic mother-daughter duo Jan and Myriam Mitchell, has been a cornerstone of Bay St. Louis’s beauty scene for over four decades.

Picture

Jan Mitchell, a trailblazer with a flair for entrepreneurship, originally opened Hairworks on Beach Boulevard. Her journey began with a vision and determination, all while expecting her daughter, Natalie. Against all odds, Jan not only established a successful salon but also created a warm, inviting space that has become a second home to many in the community. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Myriam has infused the salon with her passion for scalp and hair care, elevating Hairworks to new heights.

Picture

Their specialty lies in color services, adeptly handling everything from grey coverage to lived-in natural hair color. Their expertise also extends to precision haircuts, textured styles, and facial waxing services, catering to a broad spectrum of beauty needs. The salon’s commitment to hair health is evident in its choice of product lines like ELEVEN Australia and Kevin Murphy, known for their environmentally conscious, high-quality ingredients.

Picture

Hairworks isn’t just about haircuts and color; it’s an experience. From bridal party preparations to Brazilian Blowout Smoothing treatments, the salon ensures that every visit is special. Their flexible hours, including appointment-only Tuesdays and regular hours from Wednesday through Saturday, accommodate the busy lives of their clients.

Picture

As Myriam puts it, a visit to Hairworks is an opportunity to achieve the hair of your dreams. Whether you’re stopping by for a consultation or just to say hello, Hairworks is more than a salon; it’s a part of Bay St. Louis’s story, a place where every client is treated like family, and every hairstyle is a work of art.
