The best news is that fishing is great EVERYWHERE! Our boats are seeing great catches from the barrier islands, to the Louisiana Marsh, all the way into Lake Borgne.
The bait shops in Gulfport, Long Beach, Pass Christian, and Bayou Caddy have had a steady supply of shrimp and croakers for weeks now. The live bait has helped us greatly.
We are leaving very early to beat the heat. Most mornings we are either fishing the near shore reefs or oyster reefs with live bait. If the water is over 4-5 feet, we are fishing near with the bottom with Carolina rigs. If the water is shallower, we are using Boat Monkey popping corks with 2-foot leaders and 1/0 Kahle hooks.
The fish are feeding well, and the majority of our focus has been on speckled trout. You can spot fish by watching for slicks on the calm days. It looks exactly like someone spilled a couple of drops of oil in the water. Get upwind or up-current from where the slick originated and start fishing. Diving gulls are a dead giveaway as well.
The triple tails are moving in, too. Be sure and check everything you see. Pilings, channel markers, buoys and debris might have these tasty critters lurking underneath them. A big live shrimp works best.
Expect lines at the bait shops and boat ramps. Please be courteous and offer help when needed.
As always, have fun and be safe.
