The heat and the storms are doing their best to put a damper on our fishing, but we are making the most of it.
It looks as though that push of white shrimp we have been waiting on is just starting to come through. On my last trip coming in from the Louisiana Marsh, we found big shrimp jumping in open water. Normally finding this scenario in 12 feet of water means catfish, and yes, we caught a few. However, the amount of shrimp was enough for the speckled trout to be there as well. |

Another bonus has been the huge white trout. Some of the deeper holes we fish have been teeming with 12-14 inch white trout! One of my favorite things to do this time of year when the big white trout show up is to clean out the tackle box. Any plastic lures people leave on the boat, or that I don’t use anymore, get used to catch white trout. When they get frenzied, they will hit anything – we’ve caught plenty on bare jig heads.

Another plus of the big numbers of white trout and shrimp has been the big sharks and bull reds. When the white trout get schooled up, more often than not the bull reds and sharks are nearby. Bringing a youngster or a beginner to catch fish as big as they are is something they will never forget.
